Mason’s Pecan Shelling was started during the pecan season in 1967 by Bill & Karen Mason and was strictly seasonal based on the size of the years pecan crop. Being a “seasonal” business meant closing down over the summer until the next season began around the time of the first fall/winter freeze (Oct./Nov.).

For several years all we did (or had time to do) during “season” was crack and shell our customers pecans. If you live in Oklahoma or even Texas, there’s a good chance you have a pecan tree in your yard. A mature tree will yield between 100 to 200 pounds of in-shell pecans (depending on the year and/or if you manage it).

The 2016/2017 crop was small because it rained the 2 weeks during pollination. Pecan trees are wind pollinated, not by insects, so the rain just washed the pollen to the ground. The 2017/2018 crop was even smaller due to lack of rain during a time that the pecan needs it and then some weird rainy weather right after. Somehow that confused the tree and it sucked up the water after the shell had started to harden… which split the shell and ruined the pecan. Or that is what the “experts” are saying and what we saw with the pecans we got in to process.

The 2018/2019 crop was dismal because of the freeze in April. But the quality of the pecans we could get our hands on is very good. Because of the freeze there were very few natives and their quality just wasn’t up to our standards so we didn’t bring any in. We did get some Elliot from Louisiana that are a great substitute!

Pecan Shelling: That’s where we come in. You bring us your pecans, we weigh them and then issue you a “Claim Ticket”, in much the same way you would take your cloths to a dry cleaner. Copies of the ticket stays with your pecans through the whole process to ensure you get your pecan meats back. When your pecans have finished being processed, we will phone you to let you know they are done so you can return with your “claim ticket” to retrieve your pecans.

(Note: Without your claim ticket, you may be subject to a wait as we do not “file” based on your name, but rather the “claim ticket number”!!! Trying to pour over multiple entries in many log sheets looking for your name may take some time, especially with 10 customers behind you who did remember to bring their claim ticket in.)

Then the Retail: In 1984 the current facility was built. Something this big sometimes takes on a mind of it’s own and still does. One of the things the business had a mind to do was stay open during the summer. That required a reason, not to mention something to pay the bills.

And that was when Mason’s Pecans & Peanuts was born. We purchased a roaster so we could roast our own nuts and started bringing in the best nut and nut products we could find. Pecans, peanuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, even the harder to find brazils, macadamias and pinion (pine) nuts. To add a little fun to the mix we started selling all manner of chocolate  & candy covered nuts. Including sugar free chocolate covered nuts. We have since added some more “sugar free” or “no sugar added” products including popular fruit spreads and candies. These are enjoyed by our diabetic and calorie watching friends. We’ve not forgotten the fruitier side of life either at the “NUT HOUSE”! Dried fruits such as blueberries, cranberries, cherries, apricots, pineapple, etc… as well as the chocolate covered fruit help to keep us on the edge!
